Town Hall Cinema

Located in Enniskillen, County Fermanagh. The Town Hall building was opened by the Countess of Erne on 6th January in 1901. It was designed in a Renaissance style by Anthony Scott & his son William Scott. By 1912 it was operating as a cinema but its heyday seems to have been between 1937 and March 1951 when it was operated by Dundealgan Electric Theatres Ltd. It was regularly advertised in the press. Occasional variety was also staged. Shows were more or less daily with matinees twice a week, unless the hall was otherwise engaged, hence its 400-chairs were not fixed. It was equipped with a RCA sound system. The proscenium was 21ft wide.

A party vote in January 1951 ended the 39-year tenancy although the original notice to quit had ended the tenancy 30th September 1950. The occasional film was still shown however, such as one by the Health Committee and various cartoons in 1952.

The building suffered bomb damage by the IRA in the 1970’s ‘Troubles’.
