Lyric Theatre

The Bijou Theatre opened in 1907 in what had been the center portion of a very old two story brick and stone commercial block built sometime before 1885. Sometime between 1897 and 1902 (when the map shows a jewelry store in the future theater location), the eastern portion was replaced.

Unusually for a theatre conversion, no effort was made to extend what was a fairly shallow building. The theatre remained in operation through 1911 and by 1914 had been renamed Lyric Theatre, but the 1917 map shows a pool room here. Ironically, the building is at last extended to the rear.

It’s unclear when the building was demolished, but it may have been destroyed in the same Christmas 1934 fire that burned the building at 607. At any rate, this was certainly a vacant lot by the early-1990’s.
