ACE Theatrical Group embraces long history of preserving historic treasures and reactivating local arts communities
HOUSTON, TX — A theatrical management and development company formed by entertainment industry veterans, ACE Theatrical Group specializes in preserving historic treasures and expanding the arts community. It works to design, reconstruct and operate live performance venues throughout North America, with a long history of success.
“Many theatres have fallen into disrepair due to various reasons. As an experienced team, we have the opportunity to preserve a historic treasure, restore it and reactivate the arts community,” said David Anderson, President and CEO of ACE Theatrical Group.

Business as usual at Ashley Cinemas
VALDOSTA, GA — a fire erupted last weekend at the Ashley Cinemas but the theatre has already reopened. No significant damage occurred.

Radford couple trying to save old movie theater
RADFORD, VA — Frankie Kirk is leaving the Radford Theatre after more than 30 years when his lease runs out at the end of April. A local couple, the Caldwells, hope to keep it going by raising $150,000 to renovate and save the theatre.

Peterborough movie theater passes Kickstarter fundraising goal
PETERBOROUGH, NH — The Peterborough Community Theatre was in danger of closing but a last minute donation to their Kickstarter campaign put them over the top. The local news coverage sparked a wave of passion from the community. They now plan to reinstall some seats as well.

Plainview couple to reopen Port Washington theatre
PORT WASHINGTON, NY — The renovated Soundview Cinemas hinted at almost a year ago is closer to a reality. A local couple is rushing to finalize the upgrades and reopen the theatre by the end of April, after recently signing a lease.

Presented here in commemoration of the 45th anniversary of the release of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey is a list of the science-fiction classic’s Cinerama-promoted roadshow engagements in the United States and Canada, which offers an opportunity to honor some once-glorious movie theaters. These engagements of 2001 were shown exclusively in major cities prior to the film being given a traditional nationwide release and included reserved seating with an advanced admission price and an average of only ten scheduled showings per week. And, as with most roadshows, these original presentations included an overture, intermission, entr’acte and exit music. As well, souvenir programs were sold.
The list that follows focuses on the roadshow engagements of 2001 that had reserved seating and were promoted as a “Cinerama” presentation (in this case, a 70-millimeter print featuring six-track stereophonic sound projected onto a large, deeply-curved screen with the Cinerama brand touted in the film’s credits and in newspaper advertising).

SUFFERN, NY — The historic Lafayette Theatre is in danger of closing due to lack of a digital projector. The city is now getting involved to help keep the theatre alive.

MONTE RIO, CA — The Rio Theater is in danger of closing if it cannot raise $60,000 by May 7 to purchase a digital projector. They’ve launched a Kickstarter Campaign where you can receive special gifts for pledges of different levels. Help save this small-town by donating now.

Hit Off-Broadway Play deals with decline of film projection
NEW YORK, NY — A World Premiere play (Winner of the Susan Blackburn Prize) called “The Flick”, written by rising playwright Annie Baker, takes place in an aging movie theater in central Massachusetts and talks a lot about the decline of the modern cinema. A large part of the plot has to do with the employees facing the loss of their 35mm projector as the theatre moves forward.
Very limited tickets remain but if you have a chance, look it up at Playwrights Horizons. It only plays through this Sunday.
