California Theatre to reopen after years of planning
PITTSBURG, CA — There will be a gala on January 19 to celebrate to reopening of the California Theatre. They’ve sunk $7.6 Million into it to restore the murals and bring the theatre back to its original appearance. The city-owned building hasn’t hired an operator yet but this sounds like a great new chapter for it after sitting empty for almost 60 years!

Bow Tie Cinemas opens new quad for art and documentary films
RICHMOND, VA — Bow Tie Cinemas opened up a new art house theatre, Criterion Cinemas, next to their existing Movieland. It features four screens and stadium seating.

New ten-plex taking shape in Destin
DESTIN, FL — Carmike’s Boulevard 10 Cinema is scheduled to open this Spring with some state-of-the-art features. They will have one of their signature BIG D screens there as well as leather rocking seats.

Seven-screen Williamsburg Cinemas opens in North Brooklyn
BROOKLYN, NY — The Williamsburg Cinemas has opened, giving locals yet another brand-new cinema option. Unlike the relatively new Nitehawk though, they’re focusing less on food and beverage and more on sound and projection.

Battle over the Ritz
DESBOROUGH, ENGLAND — The Ritz, a former cinema and current wedding and conference venue may not be able to keep its name if the more famous London hotel of the same name gets its way. The luxury brand is opposed to the name being used elsewhere, even in this rural area’s building that has stood for over 80 years.

Digiplex Destinations buys seven theaters from UltraStar in CA, AZ
Digiplex Destinations has purchased seven theaters from Ultrastar in the Southwest market. The east-coast chain has now nearly doubled in size.

New theaters planned for Lewisburg and Jonesboro
LEWISBURG, WV and JONESBORO, AR — An 8-screen theater in Lewisburg and a 16-screen in Jonesboro are in the works. Few details are available regarding the specifications for the theaters but the one in Jonesboro should be open by the end of next year.
