I checked with Ray and doggone it, he had never heard of this Drive-in. I still think it closed why before 1989. I am hoping Tony B. of the old 56 Drive-in will get on CT. hope Ray tells him about it. Tony would know all about the Dixie Drive-in.
I just heard from Ray Hutto that Hi-Way 56 drive-in was on the cable show “AMERICAN PICKERS”.I somehow missed it. Wonder if anyone else saw it. They had Tony Bellamy on the show while they looked through theatre items to buy.
The screen is in near perfect shape. However, the trees have grown so much since the 80’s when it closed i figure the screen will always be there backing up to a hill with Downtown Tazewell above it. Really was a nice Drive-in at one time.Last time i was up there there was nothing in the old Tazewell Drive in spot. And the sad part is in towns that small locals just have no interest in the history of that Drive-in.
Bob, I can check with Ray Hutto he might know. i know the Bellamy brothers Tom and Tony reopened their parents old Drive-in Hi-way 56 for a few years before closing it for good. Ray has a theatre he built it is on CT, Southside Cinema.
To help you more on the crossroad of 17 and 78 there was a Sonic Drive-in Restrauant on the side of the road the Melody was on heading East.Just a few blocks pass the Sonic that is where the Melody stood. Thomson also has a Downtown Twin theatre on main st.Called the New Martin.
Best I can do without a Thomson city map would the cross roads of state highway 17 and intresects with 278/78 going out of Thomson what is left of the Melody would be on the right side of the road.Last time i drove by there and its been years since Thomson is about 30 miles away where i live, you see the foundation of the booth/concession. they use to sell mobile Homes on the lot.
Tlsloews, that is “ROLLERBOGIE” playing with Linda Blair. I thought i was losing my mind.Jimmy Cann was in ROLLERBALL with John Houseman. It had the bad release date as “JAWS” and played across the street at the Imperial. the Miller had “ROLLERBALL” and got the folks that couldn’t get a ticket to Bruce the Shark.
MELROSE has moved to my top favorites. That theatre should in operation. Great night shot of “Officer and a Gentleman”. Nashville what are you thinking.
TLSLOEWS. you mean the theatre is still standing after going dark in 1985? You would think someone in that city might try to reopen it unless it is in a bad part of town, and I bet it is in our “south augusta”.that explains it.I know you have taken pictures,Have you been tempted to venture in if an old exit door was ajar? Nick and me got in the University in Charlotte that way.I know it is tresspassing. You might have told me the about the MELROSE still standing.
You live or die by your bookings. If one doesn’t want to run rated R movies more power to them, but the community needed to support them on the G and PG movies.Thank goodness there wasn’t that stupid PG -13 rating then.
MORE NICK, if you still have that picture of the MODJESKA being torn down do you think you can get it on CT.Also the box office at Regency Mall. I gave the pictures to ROBIN ,but haven’t seen any of them.I can’t remember what else i sent, but if you could get them on it would be great. TLSLOEWS sent her some Drive-in pictures from Nashville so I hope he has better luck.Maybe He outta send them to you,I think the newness of CT has worn off with Robin.
I thought when the Carolina added the penthouse cinema upstairs that it was one of a kind, but since being on CT i have noticed a few downtown theatre pretty much did the same thing. Seems like everytime i visited {my cousin managed} that all the good movies seem to go to the Penthouse. I remember seeing “Pale Rider” in the old theatre with the booth taking up a good bit on the old theatre.
Yeah, I think you had too many somethings.

12-13-68 “THE LION IN WINTER” plays Daniel Village. Finding these old movies takes time. Rated M.
I will also get with Ray Hutto on this Drive in. Try and get the info as quick as possible.
I think with the screen so close to that hill it has been protected from the weather.

Maybe Chuck can help you,He and I seem to be the only folks interested in this grand old theatre.
