I know back in 2001 businessman Troy Hall was trying to restore the WINK theatre. He had to make bids on the building and he was the only one and bid one dollar over the$100.000 and became a theatre owner. A christian radio station he owned was moved to the WINK so he could run that and supervise the renovation. He was able to use day labor to save money. In a interview with the ATLANTA CONSTITUTION he said he remembered seeing “GONE WITH THE WIND"there. Often the concessions in the 50’s would take in$3000.00 in nickles on a busy saturday with double features and very few TV’s to watch at home.
Donnyman,if they closed it like they did REGENCY EXCHANGE in Augusta This GCC theatre most likely had rats running inside.I got into the EXCHANGE here in Augusta and the candy and popcorn were left in the candy room i had to dodge rats when i walked in.The booth was in perfect shape,Platters just like they were left.really a strange feeling walking around inside with a flashlight. REGENCY EXCHANGE is on CT.
At one time he got on the P.A. and tried to explain Film rentals to the moviegoers and thought Richard you really don’t need to do that they are getting a good deal at the BIG MO DRIVE-in.
He said he wanted to hold promotions like they did years ago in the Theatre business.Classic Car Cruise-in was being planned , I told him how Augusta Drive-ins would run all night Horror films. He took my suggestions as even then he was planning for another Screen,
Movies playing there “TITANIC” “KING AND I” and “PRINCE OF EGYPT”
“THE MUMMY” “RAT RACE” so many more that i can’t list them like “SPY KIDS” they would always try and book family features with Richard often getting on the P.A. system at intermission and asking for suggestions. for movies. suggestio
They rebuilt the concession stand, fresh blue paint ,FM sound. Admission was nine dollars per car load with film rentals it has most likely gone up,even though every time i came up to see a film he let me in free. WE BOUGHT PLENTY OF ICE CREAM.and his homecooked Hamburgers.
Richard told me sellouts are often. An average of about 300 cars for the single Drive-in.{it is now a twin Drive-in}So his per cap was excellent. Richard always invited me back for Labor Day Movies, but never got back. Never got that T-shirt either,Sold Out everytime.
i am sure Richard Boaz would like his wife,Linda given a little credit for opening the Big-Mo. As Richard told me,they came from West Virgina and in that state they grew to love Drive-ins.Like myself they would even visit closed Drive-ins dodging rattlesnakes and wasp nests. They found the Monetta Drive-in barely hanging together with rusty nails and decided here is where the dream comes true,So many of us write and dream. Richard and Linda did.
they cut overgrown trees. when i visited the site in the 80’s and snapped pictures it looked wasted away.
Chuck 1231,it have opened in 1953 ,but it closed way before 1975.Probably in the middle 50’s because i have plenty of newspaper ads and there is no mention of the Bon-Aire in any of the ads.The Forest Hills Drive-in was right beside it down a hill and I know Forest Hills closed in 1969 or 1970. You are writing about Augusta and not Orangeburg,S.C. ?
I was just going on infomation from CWalczak was giving me i wanted to put it in the right spot. As far as my Augusta Theatres and Michael is speaking about 70mm,As I told him I was going by what two Projectionist in the old Local 518 told me for my history of Augusta Theatres. Granted, i certainly don’t know it all; most of my infomation comes from discussions with projectionists filed away in my mind back in the 70’s since only one is still alive that played 70mm. I don’t have files and files of clippings from BOxoffice. have a nice day,Micheal.
My son worked in a cinema in Arlington,Texas {Dallas} that served drinks and one night a drunk attacked him in the lobby.Thank goodness staff was there to help Sean,But the Drunk went to jail and believe or not,Sean and another theatre employee WERE FIRED,BOOZE doesn’t belong in Theatres. I dealt with it constantly on Midnight shows in the 70’s and early 80’s.

I wonder if the GREEN BERETS had a world premiere at a Columbus theatre since it was filmed at Fort Benning. i don’t think you have many interested people in Columbus to do research like you do in Augusta and Atlanta, seems like the rest of Georgia cities there is no one to take the time. Maybe,I am wrong.
