Roebourne Open Air Pictures 51 Scholl Street, Roebourne, WA - 1958

Photo Roebourne Open Air Pictures facade - 1958

The Roebourne picture gardens were an outdoor theatre that, along with others in nearby Dampier and Wickham, provided social and entertainment life for the local community. Films were screened outdoors in low-slung canvas seats.

Old film and slide projectors, believed to have been used at these and other local picture gardens, are now on display in the Red Earth Arts Precinct foyer in Karratha. The City of Karratha has sought community stories, memories, and photos to preserve this unique part of its local history.
