  • <p>1920 display ad for the Rameseum Theater in Albany, Oregon, from the Sept. 8, 1920 Albany Daily Democrat. In 1932 the theater was reopened as the Granada.</p>
  • <p>A 1917 display ad for the Rolfe Theater in Albany, Oregon (the Albany Daily Democrat, January 25, 1917). This theater became the Granada in 1933.</p>
  • <p>Lindsay Anderson appeared in person at the Cable Car Cinema in Providence on November 28, 1977. He was a great film and theatre director who made movies like “If”, “This Ssporting Life,” “O Lucky Man”, “The Whales of August,” I was just an area film-buff who happened to attend this event and tried to assist Mr. Anderson with the projection of his early shorts in 35mm which he brought with him for his seminar at nearby RISD. We were in the booth together. Unfortunately the then-new cinema did not have the correct lens or aperture plate to show the older films properly, which was an embarassment to the event sponsors and an annoyance to Mr. Anderson. Four years later, after starting the Italian Film Society of RI, I had to obtain and utilize such plate and lens on my own (from the former Johnston Theatre owner) in order to show some older films without cutting ihe top and bottom of the image.</p>
  • <p>Pasolini’s first film “Accattone” (1961) was shown here by the Italian Film Society of RI on December 19, 1983 (16mm) and October 11, 1987 (35mm).</p>
  • <p>Gustavo Serena was the director and star of ZAPPATORE, the 1930 Italian silent film (with added score). It was born from the 1929 Neapolitan song of the same title about a peasant farmer whose ungrateful son gambles away money for his education and cruelly rejects his parents…until a final redemption. The December 9, 1989 showing by the Italian Film Society of RI at the Cable Car Cinema was made possible by film scholar/collector William K. Everson. 16mm.</p>
  • <p>Olmi’s masterpiece “The Tree of Wooden Clogs (L'albero degli zoccoli) was reprised here at the Cable Car on September 30, 1990 in 35mm. It had been previously shown in 16mm by the Italian Film Society at Roger Williams Park Museum in 1984. It had opened in 1979 at the Cinerama on Hope Street and got superb reviews.</p>
  • <p>October 30, 1988. This 1987 rarity from Ermanno Olmi was shown at the Cable Car in 35mm on October 30, 1988 and later in 1991 also. An Italian FIlm Society of RI offering.</p>
  • <p>Olmi’s story of the Magi “Camminacammina” (Keep Walking) is the perfect Christmas season film. It was shown here in 35mm by the Italian Film Society of RI on December 21, 1986.</p>
  • <p>Rossellini’s 1970 film “Socrate” (Socrates) was shown at the Cable Car Cinema by the Italian Film Society of RI on March 30, 1996. It had also been screened in 1986 at Roger Williams Park Museum in Providence.</p>

  • <p>The Italian Film Society of RI ran this 1983 visionary Italo-Russian gem in April 1987 and October 1991 at the Cable Car Cinema. Art enthusiasts from nearby RI School of Design were thrilled. Beautiful 35mm print shown each time.</p>
  • <p>The full uncut 3 &frac12; hour version of “Christ Stopped at Eboli” was shown at the Cable Car Cinema by the Italian Film Society of RI on November 24, 1985 and March 19, 1987. The shorter general release version was also shown, in 1995 and 1996.</p>
  • <p>Bertolucci’s first film “La Commare Secca” (The Grim Reaper), 1962, played at the Cable Car Cinema in a 16mm print from the British Film Institute on January 10, 1988.</p>
  • <p>Released in 1943. “The Children Are Watching Us” was one of De Sica’s early masterpieces. Shown by the Italian Film Society of RI in March 1990 at the Cable Car Cinema and elsewhere in RI at other times.</p>
  • <p>“Italy-Year One” by Roberto Rossellini. A 1974 film shown here on November 27, 1988 by the Italian Film Society of RI. Luigi Vannucchi plays Italian prime minister Alcide de Gasperi after the fall of fascism through the construction of democracy. 16mm print obtained from the British Film Institute. First and perhaps only RI screening ever.</p>

  • <p>Salvatore Samperi’s 1979 film ERNESTO had its RI premiere showing here in September 1985. The film would be run several times in 35mm over the next decade. Set in 1911 Trieste, it was based on the controversial Triestino dialect novel by Umberto Saba and delat with the sexual awakening of a young man.</p>
  • <p>This great Italian film KIDNAPPED (RAPITO) by Marco Bellocchio opened at the Avon Cinema in Providence on May 31, 2024. It dealt with the kidnapping of a Jewish child in 19th Century Rome by Pope Pius IX, taken from his parents and forcibly raised as a Catholic. The book by Brown’s David I. Kertzer, “The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara,” was based on those same events.</p>
