Todd-AO 70mm Alexandria Theatre SF Ad 1958

When the UA Coronet Theatre got heavy booked with all the new long run 70mm Todd-AO roadshow films playing in SF UA/SF Theatres decided in 1958 to make the ‘Alexandria Theatre’ a roadshow house and add 70mm Todd-AO equipment. The screen they put in was not as curved or large as the Coronet Theatre had with ‘Oklahoma’ in 1955. Here is a classic ad from a local SF newspaper in 1958 from my ‘Terry Photo’ movie ad collection. I did get to see in 70mm Todd-AO ‘Cleopatra’ when It ran on the Alexandria’s semi curved 70mm screen around 1963. Great theatre decor to show this classic 20th Century Fox film. It did not do well in SF and after a time UA played it here still in 70mm but no reserved seats to a near empty auditorium. The ‘Alexandria’ still sits today all closed up with the neon marquee showing nothing. They built a big condo on the back parking lot. Time to remodel and turn the former movie theatre into a night club or music event space with a deco Egyptian look inside. Someone wanted to put in a pool inside but that never took place thank God.
