I remember going to see “George A. Romero’s Day of the Dead” opening night in Savannah on Halloween night 1985 at the Abercorn Cinemas. It played for 1 week only. I can also remember going there to see “E.T.” in August 1982 for my 11th birthday and “The Karate Kid” in August 1984 for my 13th birthday. It was a nice little cinema and it’s a shame it’s gone, sadly, like just about all the other theaters I grew up with in Savannah.
This was my favorite movie theater growing up during the late 1970’s, 1980’s, and early 90’s. It was THE place to see a big movie. I saw “Smokey and the Bandit”, “Superman”, “The Empire Strikes Back”, “Raiders of the Lost Ark”, “Return of the Jedi”, “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom”, “Back to the Future”, “The Return of the Living Dead”, “Aliens”, “Terminator 2”, and countless other classics in the big house. What great memories!
mckramer is correct, the theater opened in 1987. I remember going to see “Full Metal Jacket” and “Revenge of the Nerds II” that July. The theater, sadly, has been demolished.
I doubt they will see this, but if BobT or TerryP read this, how would I be able to contact you guys? The reason I ask is because I’m working on a book about one of the films that UFDC produced back in the 80’s. I saw from some of your posts that you both worked there. I would love the chance to speak with you and see if you could help me with my research for the book.
Thanks!
