Motion Picture Exhibitor, April 21, 1965: “The Zia, Springer, N. M., has been purchased by Carl J. Garitson from John C. Wood.”

Boxoffice, Oct. 9, 1972: “Carl J. Garitson, a veteran exhibitor in the Southwest territory, has sold his Zia Theatre, Springer, N.M., to Carlos P. Gutierrez, a newcomer to the business.”

The first picture posted is of a theater in Fort Sumner. I was there a couple months ago and took this picture:

A new entry for another Zia Theater – Fort Sumner, NM is in order?

Here’s a small mystery – the Zia Theater photos here for Springer, NM appear to show two different venues. The photos from 1995, 1981, 1984 show a building with windows and a box office set back from the sidewalk, not to mention a semi-modern marquee and neighboring storefronts.

The first two photos posted above – one from 1987 – look to be a different venue, with smaller, windowless building, no marquee and a much different sign. Is this the Zia Theater in Los Lunas, NM that is listed elsewhere on Cinema Treasures?

According to the info above, the Zia’s movie days ended in 1995 – which is when this shot was taken:

Sad to see the condition of the ZIA in the picture posted by ken mc.
Each time we lose one of these old treasures, a little bit of Americana is gone that we will never be able to replace.

Here is a picture I took of the ZIA’s aprrox. the summer of 1987.

Good find! I photographed this one years ago on a trip through New Mexico, but now cannot find the pictures.
