Located in South East Portland. The 500-seat Day Theatre was opened 1915. It became the Star Theatre in 1924. In 1928 the name was changed to the Ames Theatre. The theatre closed in 1965 and went over to retail use. By 2007 it was a dance studio named Days Theatre. By 2009 the vertical blade sign was removed from the front of the building. It was reinstated by 2011 reading Day Theatre. By 2017 the theatre was ‘For Sale".

By October 2023 it had been sold and a $3.5 million renovation had begun with a new name Foster Theater on the blade sign. A grand reopening as a performing arts theatre occured on November 8, 2025.

My mom and I went to see Ben-Hur at the Ames in 1960. The theatre was packed and they put us in the “crying room,” a sealed-off area by the balcony for parents with screaming kids. The sound was piped in on a little speaker. What an idea! Wish they’d put people who check their Blackberries during movies in a place like that now!

Another reason I quit going to movies.what kind of idiot would pay 10.00 dollars to watch a movie only to play this some stupid hand held computer.

Thats a great idea Soesbe, have a closed in cell phone,Blackberries room, nothing wrong with these devises but cant people live without them for the time it takes to see a movie.I am glad back in my theatre days nobody had these things to distrack people, biggest problem we had were people talking during the movie.

This theater should be classified as “Open,” as it has almost continuously operated as a club or dance venue since it stopped showing movies.
