The Atmospheric style Palace Theatre was in downtown Brainerd, where the American Legion building now stands.
Opened on April 15, 1931 with Eddie Quillan in “Big Money”. My uncle recalls seeing films in the 1930’s and Saturday afternoon serials at this theatre for a nickel. It had closed by 1950.

The April 17, 1931, issue of the Brainerd Dispatch reported that the new Palace Theatre would open on Wednesday, April 22. The interior of the new, 475-seat showhouse would feature “…English architecture on the atmospheric type, a colorful arrangement of drapes, views of bungalows and blue sky ceiling effects….” The Palace, like the recently rebuilt Paramount Theatre, was designed by the firm of Liebenberg & Kaplan.
The City Council granted Gruesner and Luscher’s G&L Theatres the right to convert the existing Walker Building at 708 Front Street to the Palace Theatre in Nov. of 1930. After a sneak preview, it held its grand opening on April 15, 1931 with “Big Money.” It closed on Nov. 11, 1939 with “Wild Brain Kent.”
