Columbia Theater

Built in 1889, the Monte Pio Hall was located on Acushnet Avenue at the bottom of Howland Street (today renamed Wing Street). It also known as Portuguese club and later a Cape Vedean Club). The building also contained a bowling alley and a pool hall. By 1908 it had been renamed Majestic Theatre and was screening movies. It became the Columbia Theatre in 1913 which had closed by 1926. The building was demolished in the 1940’s to make way for Bay Village, the city’s first housing project.

Listed as “The Majestic” in the 1908 City Directory, and then changed to “Columbia” in the 1913 Directory, so it was operating as early as 1908.
