Opened November 3, 1971, this was the theatre that I would go to when I was growing up in the late-1970’s into the early-1990’s. It was located in the Castle Mall (which is also now demolished- it had an A & P and a K-Mart as it’s anchor stores).
As a kid, I saw “Superman: The Movie”, “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”, “Grease” and “Heaven Can Wait” there. It was always busy, especially for a second-run theatre. Later on, they converted it into a dollar theatre, which was great for a high school/college student on a budget.
The theatre closed on October 27, 1991 with Kevin Costner in “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves” & Robert Englund in “Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare”. The entire mall was torn town in the mid-1990’s after part of the roof collapsed after a big snowfall. My sister used to work there and I have many movie posters (some quite valuable now) that she gave to me when the movie left the theatre.

This opened on November 3rd, 1971. Its grand opening ad is in the photo section.
This was the sister theater to the Triangle Mall Theaters.
A Food Lion grocery store and a small strip shopping center now sits at the theater’s location. A BJ’s Wholesale Club sits in the location of the KMart.
Last operated by Loews, and was lastly known as the “Loews King & Queen Theatre”. The theater closed on October 27, 1991 with “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves” at Screen 1 and “Freddy’s Dead” at Screen 2.
