The architect was Erle Stillwell.
Theatre opened 3 March 1941.
Are there any interior photos available?
I worked at and ran This theatre from 1995-2000 and if I can find some picture I will post them here. Tough memories…
Don, I would love to see any pictures you have from that time.
Hi cptdon. There is a post on Caldwell Heritage Museum’s Facebook page asking this…
“Is there anyway I could purchase a copy of a movie that was made in Lenoir in the early 1940’s. It used to show as a pre-show at the Center Theatre in Lenoir. It was about a girl that was kidnapped. I think it was called "My Gang” or possibly “Kidnapped”
Any chance you could help with any information about this please?
I was hoping someone could verify some info for me. There was an old-school theater in Lenoir like this one that was in operation in the early 90s – the balcony was half converted into the world’s smallest auditorium (I believe it was to show art films) next to a very limited view, narrow balcony. Is this the theater?
Photo and article added from the August 2, 1992 Charlotte Observer. It confirms the tiny piggy back theater added in the former balcony. Today’s google street view shows this theater intact, marquee and all, but deteriorating.
Belated thanks @ncmark - I saw the article you posted confirming its “deformed twin” status (how “Basket Case” of them). I worked at the somehow still functioning Carolina Theater in downtown Hickory back in college and would occasionally have to drive out to this theater to swap out film cannisters, large reels, etc. I recall seeing the upstairs “theater” firsthand and it was a bit of a joke. If there were 30 seats in it, I’d be surprised, although they had been using the space for storage, so it was hard to tell.
It reminded me of going to the house of one of my ex-wife’s college friends and seeing that the husband had converted an over-the-garage bonus room into two bedrooms for his daughters. Not a terrible idea, but the dude had zero construction experience. To say there were rough edges is an understatement. It just didn’t look like it belonged (like the half theater).
