The 370-seat Teatro am Central opened as a live theatre on 12th October 1951. The building also contains a hotel. It presented plays & comedies with small casts. It was only a moderate success. It was converted into a cinema, opening on 15th November 1958 with Debbie Reynolds in “This Happy Feeling” having been renamed Kino Alba.
It was taken over by the Arthouse Kinos chain in 1999 and the building is now protected as a listed building. In 2007, it was carefully restored with the renovation including new patterned gold wallpaper in the auditorium which was the same as the original wallpaper. It is considered one of the best art house cinemas in Zurich. It is a member of the Europa Group of arthouse cinemas.
