The photo says “1001 N Main St” which is incorrect. The State Theater was closer to “101 N Main St”, which is downtown Columbia, IL.

My mother worked there after WWII. I remember the night the State caught fire in the early 50’s, when I was less than five years old. My parents, brother and I walked to see the fire from our home at 418 N Main St.

I can never remembering it re-opening. I think the building was an insurance agency and other small offices after that.

I never remembering seeing any movies there, so it was probably closed when it burned.

The State Theatre opened in the early-1940s, and was a replacement of the Turners Theatre (formerly the Turner Hall) but not an immediate replace. It was destroyed by a rear stage fire on March 12, 1953 estimating a $40,000 loss, and a First National Bank was built at the site.
