PLEASE CHANGE NAME TO:

NEW 50 DRIVE-IN

AKA FOX 50 DRIVE-IN

CHANGE ADDRESS TO

11000 WEST 87th STREET

W. 87th Street and I35 puts it down on the Map South on W 87th TERRACE? Overland Parkway/Switzer Bypass/69 goes over part of the former Drive-In. The Drive-In was in Lenexa. That small area East of I35 and North of 87th Street is NOT part of Overland Park even though those business use an Overland Park adress.

Open ~1950-~1980? Can anyone verify the exact dates?

I know it was called the New 50 in 1967.

Owners:

1969 Fox Intermountain

1975-1980 Mann Theaters Corporation of California

? National General Theaters

More info and photos are always welcome.

At one time I worked in the district office for Mann out of Wichita, Kansas. However this theatre would have been in the adjacent district. I do not recall Mann operating a drive-in in the Kansas City area, although I could be mistaken. On the dates listed above, if Fox Intermountain and Mann operated this drive in, then NGC would have operated it in the dates in between. I am curious if anyone else has any information about this property.

I know that Fox got some relief from the feds around 1960 or so, from the anti-trust suit in the 1940’s. The acquired the New 50 drive in, and one in the Topeka, Ks area. I can’t recall the name of the drive-in in Topeka, but I did work there as assistant concession stand manager. But it was a part time job, and I couldn’t support myself on what I was making. So, I had to drop it in favor of my day-job. And it was Fox Midwest, not Intermountain.

This drive-in advertised as the “New 50 Drive-In” in the 1960 St. Teresa’s Academy yearbook, the Avila.
