Avenue Theatre

Boxoffice magazine reported in June of 1949 that the Avenue Theatre would be opening on the 6th June. It was formerly called the Arena Theatre and would be furnished with all new equipment. The Avenue Theatre first appeared in the Independent Theatre Guide of the Los Angeles Times on June 12, 1949, playing the second-run films “Down to Earth” and “Allegheny Uprising.” The building with its flat roof and non-descript façade looked like it wasn’t built as a theater—just a converted commercial space. The newspaper address was listed as being on 8th Avenue, which was later changed to University Avenue. In 1958 it dropped out of the LA Times guide but was not necessarily closed.

The vacant building sat unused for many years and was demolished after 2004.
