The York Run Open Air Theatre was opened July 7, 1948 with the western “Black Gold” starring Anthony Quinn. It was operated by Steve Danko, Danko, Sharp & Duncan and had a capacity for 300 cars.
It was renamed Moonlite Drive-In on April 1, 1949, when it was still operated by Steve Danko with Co-operative Theatre Services. Approx. location for this drive-in was on Big 6 Rd. just south of the intersection of Morgantown Rd & York Run Rd. Now an empty field.
The address is 2743 Morgantown Rd, Smithfield, PA. Today, the property is one big open field and offers no trace that a drive-in ever existed in that location. http://tinyurl.com/p9dw5e7
The Moonlite Drive In was leased to Manos Enterprises of Greensburg, PA. In the late 50’s It continued to operate under their management until the late 70s (I Think). I managed the Drive in in1970 to 72. It was always a nice drive in, and a nice drive from anywhere in the area. As with most drive ins the profits fell, with the longer play times the film companies demanded. and this made the Corporate Run drive ins no longer profitable. Dan Hughes.
Renamed Moonlite on April 1, 1949.
Closed in the mid-1980s.
