News report of the missing reels.
This theater made the news due to being shipped an incomplete print of “Return of the Jedi.” They were sent two Reel 2’s and no Reel 4 and didn’t receive a Reel 4 until later that day. They started the first screening knowing they had an incomplete print. Imagine that first show audience’s reaction of experiencing the end of Reel 3 (the very beginning of the speeder bike sequence) transitioning to the start of Reel 5 (Luke talking to Leia at the Ewok village)!
Closed on December 8, 2003.
Opened on May 25th, 1983. Grand opening ad posted.
I remember watching Return Of The Jedi here. I was 12 years old. I remember during the scene in Jabba’s palace, the film burned and we had to continue the movie in another theater. I also remember this theater played Return Of The Jedi for more than a year.
I saw Return of the Jedi four times in that theater! Twice in the first year of its initial release (August 1983 and January 1984); during its 1985 re-release; and the Special Edition in 1997!
I can’t believe the not-too-far-away single screen Vogue theater (opened in 1945) outlived the Sweetwater Theater (opened in 1983) in business.
No, this was NEVER an AMC Theater. It was Pacific 6 as it started with six screens. Then three more were added during its final years.
At one point, did this use to be an AMC theater in the late 80’s early 90’s? I remember the name you mentioned, “pacific 6 theaters” but from my memory, it was a lot bigger. Any thought(s)? Thanks in Advance :)
