Smalley's Theater in Oxford NY

Smalleys Theatre was opened November 15, 1937. Research in the 1970’s done based on old newspaper articles indicates this theatre closed in 1952.

The empty building was adjacent to the Victory supermarket, and was still standing as late as the early-1990’s, but has since been demolished.

Smalley’s Oxford Theatre first appears in 1937 in this finding aid to the records of Smalley’s Theatres held by the New York State Historical Association. That is most likely the year it was built.

I just updated the street view to get the site right. If you’re looking at a parking lot with a large, low green building in the distance, that’s where it was.

Binghamton Press article of the same year confirms that this theatre closed in 1952.

An article reprinted in the South New Berlin Bee (!) from the Oxford Review Times indicates an opening for this theater of Nov. 15, 1937.

OxfordHistorian – This is the only image I could find of Smalley’s Theater in Oxford, NY. The theater sat to the back of the parking lot facing toward the village park (East).

The town of Oxford, New York was notable across the nation and around the world for the home of the original and real Pathé rooster, who was raised and trained by a local hardware merchant named Mort Cooper. Pathé News selected his bird out of 269 entrees and pocketed a grand total of $1,000 for relinquishing the rights to the bird, and that same exact bird became the mascot for both Pathé and Pathé News.
