In a 1982 interview for the Chicago Tribune, actress Eva Marie Saint (born in 1924) remembered “a movie theater we kids had nicknamed ‘The Stinkbox.’ The theater was in Delmar, N.Y., and I think it had been built over a sewer. It was the only movie theater in town, and the management had to spray perfume all through the house to counteract the bad odors.”
