Joy Theatres opened this Cinema in 1950 as a single screen. It was later expanded to a 6 screen with a new grand opening on September 30, 1973 and was renamed Joy’s Cinema City. By the early-1980’s it was expanded again to 8 screens. In 1998 it was operated by Silver Cinemas and closed in 2000. The building is now occupied by a Toyota dealership.

Saw several movies there. Mom jokingly called it a “Firetrap”
I grew up going to this theater throughout my child hood (70’s-80’s), and into college (90’s). We used to run across the interstate, cross the drainage pipe over the canal to get there (Crazy)! This was the time when the ticket taker used to guard the door making it a challenge to sneak into R-rated movies. Also, I remember you had to walk up the stairs to the second floor to go use the bathroom. Man I miss that place! Fun times!!!
There was nothing on this property before the development of the Cinema City Shopping Center in 1973. Joy Houck had the SBA guarantee the 15-year lease on the land in 1972.
From memory Joy’s Cinema City 6 expanded to 8 screens in 1983. MI Theatres took over from Joy’s in early 1994. In early 1997 Silver Cinema took over operating the theater. Cinema City 8 closed September 14, 2000 amid Silver Cinema’s bankruptcy. The theater and shopping center were torn down in the summer of 2004 to make way for Ray Brandt Toyota dealership.
