Boxoffice, Dec. 1, 1956: “The new Lakewood Drive-In, located on the Old Charlestown pike just two miles from the Thomas Jefferson school off the Hamburg Pike, opened to the public early last month. Owners and managers of the outdoor theatre are Jacob Woehrle and his son, John. Mrs. Evelyn Payne of Salem is a stockholder in the firm. The theatre is equipped to handle 525 cars and the entertainment center also has a modern refreshment stand.”
Opened in 1956, closed in the 1980s.
I have a better address.
2620 Charlestown Pike, Jeffersonville, IN 47130.
Part of the entrance road is at this location.
Please update.
No … strike that in parenthesis. Just Charlestown Pike.
So then it should be Charlestown Pike (historically Charlestown – New Albany Pike) & Savannah Drive.
You are correct is north of the location given. The reason why I use cross streets is because Google Maps are off some, sometimes by alot. It is close enough for the purpose of identifying the location of the drive-in.
The local GIS doesn’t give street addresses for the Pike in that area. Google gives that location as between 2640 & 2760 Charlestown Pike. That’s as close as I can get. (and Google isn’t that reliable) All of the ads from that period just give a general location and then a “follow the signs”.
The more recent aerial that’s posted here has the streets of Foxboro showing. It was just north of the location given. It’s the “ball diamond” shape bordered by Savannah & Gander Drives.
No … it isn’t. I’m a cartographer. If you want to see the locations of drive-ins in this area go to Wikimapia and use the “historical layer / disappered object” setting.
The correct address is:
Charlestown Pike & Lakewood Blvd Jeffersonville, IN 47130
