The Amazon Theatre predated the future Rex Theatre and was listed on the Sanborn Maps of 1921. Motion Picture News reported on May 24, 1919, that Walter Wood, owner of the Amazon Theatre, would be building a new theatre a few doors away from his present theatre. Apparently the Rex Theatre didn’t get built until 1923 and then under a new owner.
When the Rex Theatre opened on October 24, 1923, the Spokane Daily Chronicle reported that the owner was W.L. (Walter) Casey. The Spokane Daily Chronicle noted that Mr. Casey had been in Bonners Ferry for three years and had purchased the Amazon Theatre from the previous owner and then built the Rex Theatre. It is assumed that the Amazon Theatre closed when the Rex Theatre opened.
According to the Daily Chronicle, Mr. Casey got his start in the theatre business in Hillyard, Washington and in 1923 operated the theatre in Newport, Washington. His other Idaho theatres were in Priest River and Spirit Lake.
