Sussex West Drive-In

The Sussex West Drive-In was located north of the town and interestingly enough, east of the Sussex Highway. It was opened on August 27, 1970 with “The Boatniks” & “Blackbeard’s Ghost”. It was owned and operated by Richard Derrickson. It was renamed Super 13 Drive-In in 1983 and closed in 1984.

The screen was torn down, but the concession stand, ticket booth, ramps, entrance way and base of the marquee are still standing.

Boxoffice, April 13, 1970: “A request for a zoning change which would permit construction of a drive-in north of Laurel on U.S. 13 has been approved by the planning and zoning commission of Sussex County. Midway Enterprises, owned by Richard H. Derrickson of Rehoboth Beach, requested the change on 15 acres of land from residential to business to be used for a family-type theatre. The proposed theatre would accommodate 412 cars.”
