Rialto Theatre

The Elyria Theatre opened on November 23, 1904. It was renamed Rialto Theatre from December 20, 1917, reopening with “Silent Man”. It was operated by Melton Phelos who operated the Strand Theatre. The Rialto Theatre had a roof garden.

It was closed around 1942 and the vacant building was damaged by a fire in 1945. It was set to be refurbished by Seymor Amster’s theatre circuit which apparently never happened.

1906 Cahn guide gives the seating as 1,200. Still doing stage shows as well at that point. Prices $.25 to $1.50 (or about $7.10 to $42.60 today).

The actual opening date is most likely November 23, 1904. It also went with the name “Opera House” only in advertisements but it was officially named the Elyria Theatre. Besides, Elyria already had an Opera House beforehand.
