New Grand Theatre and 6th Avenue, Portland, Oregon c.1915

Sullivan & Considine launched the $200,000 New Grand Theatre on February 7, 1912, Portland’s second Grand Theatre building. The silent-era theatre did well until improved motion picture theatres populated the area. By the decade’s end, the theatre was a workhorse playing films daily from 8:30am to 4:00am - a silent era grind house that had several different owners in the late-1910’s and early-1920’s. The theatre didn’t make the transition to sound and was demolished.

The historical street address for the New Grand was 105 Sixth St. This is from the Polk city directories. Also, the Hong Kong Cafe (sign shown just below the New Grand signage) was at 107½ Sixth St. In the “Great Renumbering of the 1930s” Portland renamed and renumbered several streets.
