Galleria Cinemas (Official)
Functions: Movies (First Run)
Previous Names: Eden 4, Tal-Lira Cinema
Located in Fgura, to the south of the island’s capitol Valetta, this was originally the site of the Viceroy Cinema which was built and opened just after the end of World War II and demolished in the mid-1990’s. (it has its own page on Cinema Treasures).
The Galleria Shopping & Entertainment Centre opened to include a 4-screen miniplex named the Eden 4. It was soon acquired by the company behind the Tal-Lira chain of discount pound shops and it was re-named Tal-Lira Cinema. In keeping with the nature of shops in the centre, the cinema offered 3rd-run films at cut-prices.
I first encountered this cinema in May 2012, during a visit to the island by the British based Cinema Theatre Association. At that time, a photo-stop' was all that was possible. However, during a holiday in February 2018, I was able to make a more comprehensive visit. So it was that, on 12th February, I saw a screening of “Fity Shades of Freed” starring Jamie Dorman & Dakota Johnson in Screen 3. By this time, the miniplex, operated by Galleria Trading Ltd. had been renamed Galleria Cinemas and the programming policy had changed to the screening of 1st-run films at standard prices (this was the opening week for this film). In addition to the cinema and the Tal-Lira Jumbo Store, there is a Tal-Lira Plus Cafe and a Jumperoo children’s play area.
Seating capacities are: Screen 1:297; Screen 2:184; Screen 3:182 and Screen 4:114. The auditoriums are comfortable and nicely raked, but they are a bit ‘tired’. and I was told that they are soon to be refurbished.
