Mustang Drive-In

The Park Drive-In launched in west Sweetwater on Highway 80. Opening on June 28 1951 with Dick Powell in “Station West” & Jane Wyman in “The Lady Takes a Sailor”. During the third season of its operation, I.R. Manor sold the ozone to J.T. Carty and Ray Wilson who changed it to the Mustang Drive-In in 1953, the local high school team’s mascot.

A possible address is 2094 State Loop 432, Sweetwater, TX.

A 1966 aerial photo shows what appears to be the remains of a drive-in with a go-kart track. The drive-in was on the north side of what is now West Texas Gas and about a ½ mile east of the Midway Drive-In which is still standing.

Today, there is no trace of the drive-in remaining.

I believe the 1987 topo view is of the Midway drive in down the road from the Mustang drive in.

Here are the coordinates for this old Drive-In: 32°27'43.81"N 100°26'21.84"W. You can also use this partial address to get there via Google Earth: Bales Street, Sweetwater, TX 79556. It is (North)behind the current business. In the July 2019 street view, there is a sign on the building that says Key Energy Services. There isn’t much left of the drive-in.

Boxoffice, Oct. 31, 1953: “Park Drive-In on west U.S. 80 has been sold by L. R. Manor to J. T. Carty and Ray Wilson, both of El Paso. They renamed the theatre the Mustang in honor of the high school football team.”
