Located in what was then called the Derrytown Mall (now known as the The Cocoaplex Center) the Gallery Theatre opened in 1972 by local Hershey resident Donald Erwin. It was a storefront operation and one of the first tenants in the shopping plex. I believe the opening attraction may have been “The Godfather”.
In 1975 the Gallery Theatre was sold to Marv Troutman who ran a small chain of Central Pennsylvania theatres and the name was changed to The Derry Theatre.
Troutman sold to another operator about 1985 and the theatre closed sometime either in 1988 or 1989 when it was converted to retail space.

The Gallery Theatre opened its doors on June 10, 1972 with Bruce Dern in “Silent Running”. This was the first indoor movie theater to operate in Hershey since the downtown Hershey Theatre dropped first-run movies in its entirety in the first quarter of the 1970s. It was renamed the Derry Theatre in 1976.
The Derry Theatre closed for the final time on August 20, 1988 with “Bull Durham”.
