Opening night advertising for Sandy Boulevard Drive-in, Portland, Oregon 1950

The Sandy Boulevard Drive-In was opened on June 14, 1950 with Audie Murphy in “The Kid From Texas” & Robert Taylor in “Conspirator”. On July 18, 1950, Boxoffice wrote, “The new 800-car Sandy Boulevard Drive-In erected by Outdoor Theatres, Inc., on a 12-acre site near the intersection of E. 92nd Street and Sandy Boulevard, recently was opened”. It had a 54x60-foot screen at that point.

The 1952 Theatre Catalog listed the Sandy Boulevard Drive-In with a capacity of 890 cars, owned by Andy Anderson, Forman Bros. It had the address at 9345 NE Sandy Boulevard and was still included in a 1978 topo map, although it had closed on June 12, 1977 with Peter Falk in “Murder by Death” & James Caan in “Harry and Walter Go to New York”.

When built, I-205 cut through the east side of the viewing area; the rest of the site is now a dog park.

9501 Sandy Blvd, Portland, OR 97220.

This is the correct address for this theatre.

This points to the drive in entrance road which wrapped around the drive in and now the transit center.

Hwy 205 took most of this one out though a ¼ of the ramps are still visible in San Park on 92nd…

Please update.

The Sept. 22, 1951 issue of Boxoffice ran a length article about the first anniversary of the Sandy Boulevard and its manager, R. H. Mills. “People often call the theatre for matinee time but, of course, there is none. Inquiries for night show times often are followed with the demand, "Why so late?” To that Mills merely replies, “Did you vote for daylight saving?” … The first anniversary was observed with five days of special programs at the Sandy Boulevard Drive-In, which is owned by Outdoor Theatres, Inc."
