Scala Cinema

Located in the Armthorpe district to the northeast of Doncaster, on Church Street adjacent to the Plough Hotel. The Scala Cinema was opened in 1929 with 1,400-seats. It was equipped with a Morrison sound system which was later replaced by a Western Electric(WE) sound system. It had a 20ft wide proscenium. It was still open in 1958, by which time a CinemaScope screen measuring 28ft x 18ft had been installed (possibly in front of the original proscenium?). The seating capacity had been reduced to 893-seats. It had closed by 1963 and the front section of the building had been demolished to convert into a motor car showroom for Armthorpe Motors.

I has since been demolished and the site is now an extension to the car park for Netto (now Morrisons) supermarket.
