Located in the Newport Plaza Shopping Center. The Newport Plaza Theatre was opened by Automated Theatres of America on July 5, 1970 with James Franciscus in “Beneath the Planet of the Apes” showing on both screens, presented on 16mm film. Cinema I had 334-seats and Cinema II had 327-seats and had a staff of 4 persons: a manager, a projectionist, a girl selling tickets and confectionary and a porter. Automated Theatres of America went bankrupt in 1971. It was reopened on January 27, 1971 but later closed.

It was reopened by General Cinema on August 11, 1972 with Timmothy Bottoms in “The Last Picture Show” & Raquel Welsh in “Kanas City Bomber”. It was closed in 1981. A chiropractor and an auction house now operated from the building.

It would appear that in between the December 1970 foreclosure on Automated Theatres, and the General Cinema takeover in August 1972, someone else did take over the theatre and reopened it on Wednesday, January 27, 1971, with CATCH-22 and ON A CLEAR DAY YOU CAN SEE FOREVER.
