The Starland Drive-In, located four miles east of Welch, was opened on July 6, 1950 with speakers for 450 cars by Weldon Cook and Robert Livingston Russell, Sr.; the first Drive-In in McDowell County.
The theatre operated from March through November showing six different movies a week.
Due to the advent of television and the reduction in population in this coal region the Drive-In closed in 1986.
