This started life as the Kabukiza which opened in 1900 as an independent operated theater, but became part of Shochiku’s ownership in 1920 and officially became a Shochiku-owned theater. It began screening films in 1934.

The theater was once destroyed by a fire in 1936, and the theater was immediately rebuilt afterward. It reopened on December 31 of that same year which went under the name “Kyogoku Theater”. It was renamed the Kyoei Theater shortly before World War II.

Throughout the remainder of its history, the theater went under the names “Shochiku Eiga Theater” and “SY Eiga Theater” before closing for the final time in November 2001.

This started life as a playhouse under the name Shinkyogoku Sakaiza during the earlier half of the 1890s. During the mid-1890s, Otani Takejiro became the impresario of the Shinkyogoku Sakaiza in place of his father in 1895. Unfortunately the Shinkyogoku Sakaiza closed in 1899 and was demolished. The following year in 1900, the Gionkan Theater in Hanamikoji relocated to the site of the former Sakaiza and opened its doors as the Kabukiza. It wasn’t until 1934 when the Kabukiza began screening movies, two years before the fire.

The exact address is 557 Nakano-cho, Shinkyogoku-shijo-agaru, Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture.
