Robert and David Ross changed St. Cloud movie-going forever when the created the Cinema 70 as an outparcel building adjacent to the Crossroads Malls in 1965. But with only one hardtop theater, they wanted to play art and independent films and create an office space for their growing company, Cinema Entertainment Corporation. They launched the Cinema Arts Theatre in downtown St. Cloud with Robert Redford’s overlooked film, “Downhill Racer” on January 23, 1970. The venue seated 250 patrons.
The venue closed on December 2, 1977 for a refresh. It re-emerged as a triplex, the Cinema Arts Theatre 1-2-3 on December 16, 1977. The good news is that there was a free municipal parking spot across the street; the bad news is that it was challenging to get from the parking lot to the theater. In January of 1989, the venue was struggling in the multiplex era of cinema exhibition and was reduced to sub-run, discount status. First run films played at the CEC Crossroads Center Mall 6.
When CEC built a 10-screen megaplex, the Crossroads Cinema then became the six-screen destination for discount, sub-run films. CEC closed the Cinema Arts 3 on October 7, 2001 with “Pearl Harbor”, “The Score”, and “Shrek”.
