The Himeji Grand Theater opened its doors in March 1955 with Jane Powell in “Seven Brides For Seven Brothers” as its first film, but unfortunately its date remains unconfirmed at this time.
On December 22, 1964, the building received renovation and reopened as a twin-screener under the names Himeji Toei Grand Theater and the Grand Theater Palace. A third screen named the “Daigeki Academy” opened on April 27, 1973, and two more screens named the Daigeki Plaza and Daigeki Roman were added on the fourth floor on October 10, 1975, which brought the number of screens to five.
The Daigeki Plaza and Daigeki Roman auditoriums closed on May 5, 1993, and both auditoriums were converted into a karaoke booth called “Karaoke Zone Time Machine” two months later, which operated until September 28, 2014.
The other three auditoriums were unified under the name “Daigeki Cinema” and continued to operate until its final closure on November 8, 2015. Screen 1 last operated with 606 seats, Screen 2 having 308 seats, and Screen 3 having 120 seats. It was demolished the following year and an apartment building was constructed on the site, originally scheduled for completion in September 2018 but was halted shortly thereafter.
