The Harris Theatre was the town of Irvine’s first sound movie house. Opened in the silent era by Wilcox and Witt, the Harris Theatre was a very successful movie house. It would add sound in 1928 and would add improved sound in 1931 to remain viable.
On August 11, 1940 during the final showing of Alice Faye in “Lillian Russell,” a nitrate film fire decimated the building with all 250 patrons making their way to safety. All four walls held but the entire interior of the theater was obliterated.
A New Strand Theatre began construction almost immediately with C.C. Russell creating the venue caddy corner from the Strand Theatre. The Strand Theatre was rebuilt for retail purposes, and the building remains in place in the mid- 2020’s.

Sorry: This opened as the Harris Theatre and explains the Harris name atop the building. It may have also been a home to the Gaines Theatre for a brief period.
