In March 2023, in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, work began on a major re-development of the three-floor former House of Fraser department store in the Kingsgate Shopping Centre. Planning permission had been granted in 2019.
Developer WD Kingsgate said it was making the “largest investment in the town centre since Kingsgate opened” more than 20 years ago. (The cost of the scheme has not been revealed, although Kirklees Council made a loan of £7m to ensure it could go ahead.)
It was estimated that the new Shopping Centre would open in September 2024, but that slipped to Easter 2025.
Light Cinemas not only operate the six-screen multiplex, but also the wider entertainments centre in what it has described as its most ambitious project to date. The many other leisure activities include a games arcade from SEGA, a next-generation StarQuest Laser experience, a nine-lane bowling alley, a film-themed 10-hole mini golf course and a climbing wall alongside electric shuffleboard, interactive darts, axe throwing, curling, a batting cage and a brand new interactive football experience. (The plans also included a sky bar with an outside ‘helter skelter-style’ corkscrew slide; however, that has been dispensed with.)
The Light Cinema opened on Friday 11th April 2025, just in time for the Easter holidays.
Seating capacities are: Screen 1:108, Screen 2:121, Screen 3:116, Screen 4:126, Screen 5:91 and Screen 6:92.
The auditoriums are fitted with an array of luxury seating: Wingback chairs, “Ultimate Recliners”, Lounger beds and Sofa seating, where the arm rests can be raised.
