The original Saga Biografen, or the Sage Theatre/Cinema in English, was designed by Umeå’s former city architect Kjell Wretling, who also designed the building in 1953, in which the theater is housed on behalf of Svenska Förenade Biograf AB, a subsidiary of Europafilm.
The Sagabiografen opened its doors on October 1, 1959 featuring a 46ft screen and a total capacity of 580 seats. Later renamed the Saga Cinema, Europafilm operated the Saga until 1984, when the Swedish Film Industry bought the chain. After the Svensks Filmindustri chain opened their nearby 9-screen Filmstaden in 1993, the Sage Cinema closed as a movie theater that December following his contracts being terminated.
In March 1994, NCC, in collaboration with the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning, began a major renovation to open it as a venue by architect Olle. According to the idea, the independent theatre group Ögonblicksteatern and the local Revybolaget were able to run the Sage together, but after the latter went bankrupt, Ögonblicksteatern was allowed to run Saga Teatern themselves. The Sage Cinema, now with a 52ft stage and just over 370 seats, reopened its doors on September 28, 1994, which reopened the same day as the sinking of the MS Estonia which killed 852 people over the waters of the Baltic Sea.
It was closed on December 31, 2016.
