The Rancho Park Mall was more of a shopping center/mini-mall behind a gas station in Taos. The Taos Cinema opened there on May 5, 1978 with demonstrations of its Dolby Stereo surround system showing the Olympics and on May 11, 1978 with “Pete’s Dragon”. Wally Chatwin was the operator.
Taos Plaza operator Leo Gallegos took on the venue closing it in March of 1985 under pressure for showing films including “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and “Avenging Angels”. Karl Kahn took over the venue reopening it as the High Society Cinema on April 25, 1985 with Harrison Ford in “Witness”.
Blue Pearl Corp. and Trans-Lux took on both the Plaza and the High Society Cinema. They opened a four-plex to essentially replace the two aging venues. Blue Pearl & Trans-Lux opened its Storyteller Cinema 4 on November 21, 1992. They steered the High Society Cinema to closure on April 8, 1993 with “Jack, the Bear” and “The Crush” splitting the one-screen venue.
Trans-Lux next closed the Taos Plaza Theatre on September 6, 1993. The Storyteller 4 would be expanded to seven screens.
