The Downtown Cinema is a short-lived movie house in Summerville, opening its doors on June 18, 1982 with Katharine Hepburn in “On Golden Pond” featuring rocking chair seating and Dolby Stereo, but unfortunately this theater suffered several closures and reopenings in the mid-1980’s.
It did have a brief reopening on March 6, 1987 but closed on May 9, 1987 after vandals broke into the theater, and destroyed every lightbulb for the projection equipment. The Downtown Cinema reopened for possibly the last time on June 3, 1988, but closed two months later because of a black group acquiring the theater space. It was then used for special events and live performances.
