Majestic Theatre

This theater is listed in the 1914-15 AMPD. I believe it was located in the Opera House, which was constructed sometime before 1893, and is still shown on the 1912 map. The Opera House is listed in the 1905 Cahn guide, but no capacity is given.

The structure was a basic wooden building with a good-sized stage at the rear. This theater appears to have closed before 1926. A Gem Theatre of 175 seats is listed in that Yearbook, which must have been a storefront theater on Topeka Avenue.

The address is an estimate. The historical name of the street was Emporia Avenue, although east of Topeka it changed to Ottawa Avenue. Later maps have not been digitized, but this was demolished long ago, and the site is occupied by a small medical office that might date to the 1950’s.
