The November 20, 1972 issue of Boxoffice announced the upcoming opening of the Casbah Cinema at East 5th Street and Walnut Street. It was to be on the third floor of the Gillis Opera House complex, and was owned by Marion Trozzolo, then developing the River Quay neighborhood it was in. (It’s now known as the River Market neighborhood.)
The theater was to seat just 100, and would have 35mm and 16mm projectors for “foreign and domestic classics”. It was to open with “The Red Shoes”, which matched the first Kansas City Star advertisement I could find, on November 25, 1972. The advertisement listed the address as 23 ½ East 5th Street.
The last Star advertisement I could find was for “My Little Chicadee” (sic) on January 20, 1973. On June 7 that year, the Star ran a classified for-sale advertisement for the Casbah Cinema with equipment, “Full price $10,000 will finance”.
