Built as a 1,600-seat live theatre in 1884. In 1910 films were being screened as part of the variety programme. On 19th February 1937 the Teatro Novedades was destroyed by a bomb and the fire which followed the explosion.

The ruins stood until July 1957 when architect Miguel Ponseti Vives was hired by the Balana Group to design a new Cine Novedades. Architect Antoni Bonamusa was responsible for the Streamline Moderne style decoration in the building. It opened on 21st April 1960 with Audrey Hepburn in “The Nun’s Story”. It was a large cinema with around 1,900-seats. Seating was provided in orchestra, balcony and 2nd balcony levels. It became a premiere cinema in the city, screening roadshow presentations of “Ben Hur, "The Guns of Navarone”, “Doctor Zhivago” etc. In later years it was still a first run city centre cinema, screening “The Mission”, “Rain Man”, “Fame”, “Blade Runner”, “Big Trouble in Little China”, “Superman III” & Last Tango in Paris". On 10th July 1992 the stage was brought into use with a production of the musical “Cabaret”. The Cine Novedades was closed on 30th September 2000 with Clint Eastwood in “Space Cowboys”.

The theatre stood vacant & unused until September 2014 when plans were announced to demolish it and build retail, a hotel and car parking on the site. It was demolished in 2017 and the new building had been completed by 2022.
