Theater

This early theater was located in the eastern half of the Garfield Block, an old two story brick fronted stone building constructed sometime before 1886.

This half was originally less than half the depth of the western half. Sometime after 1905, when the map shows a millinery here, a deep one story extension was added, likely to create the theater space.

This is the only indoor theater shown on the 1911 map. If this survived until 1914-15, the AMPD lists an Orpheum, Star, and Crystal. Both the Orpheum Theater and Crystal Theater were definitely on Main Street somewhere.

The 1923 and 1949 maps are not available online, but this was closed by 1926. This building has been badly mistreated, and after several slovenly remodels, the theater space has only part of the historic facade remaining. It is in fair condition, and used by a gym. Note that the historic address was 104.

According to an old postcard, this was the Orpheum. The building originally had an elaborate cornice with a raised central portion containing the name of the building on a curved tablet.
