Peter Rhode, Sr. had come to America from Germany and erected his Rhode Opera House in 1890 on what was then Market Street, now 56th Street. After a major fire in 1899, a new theatre was built in its place with Peter Rhode’s son Joseph Rhode as manager. It became the home of major road shows, touring performers and motion pictures as well as political rallies and similar programs. In 1926, the Saxe Amusement Company of Milwaukee purchased the Rhode Opera House and demolished it to erect the $500,000 Gateway Theatre.
